Chris Hales presents his
interactive film/video works, discussing their production
and screen presence as interactive works:
"I'm an artist and certainly not a film theorist
or a filmmaker. I think what I'm trying to do is a little
bit of everything anyway
there's a terminology
with film, video whatever. Filmed with a video camera,
whatever you want to call it. Things like interactive
film, art film: it possibly could be cinema, it could
be movie."

*THE TWELVE LOVELIEST THINGS I KNOW
Explanation: Children were interviewed and asked to describe what
would be the 12 loveliest things they know, and these were gathered
into themes. When reflected upon with the eyes of adulthood, this
formed the basis of a personal documentary which attempts to provide
emotion and thoughtful reflection.

Interaction: Things that stand out intuitively as colourful or
moving or that catch the eye can be touched. Coloured images appear
to an old man which represent themes collated from children: achievement,
speed, success, caring, play etc. Themes are developed by intuitive
clicking. It is possible to experience fairground rides, flying
(and crashing) a kite, walking a dog, sledging, bicycle riding and
similar events. Choosing symbols of adulthood can bring harsh reality.
If no touches are made, the film eventually reverts on its own
to the central motif of the elderly man and his thoughts.
*SKETCHBOOK
Explanation: Filmed within a 100 metre radius in the countryside,
an interactive world is revealed.
Interaction: Sequences will loop indefinately until the viewer
touches the interactive key point which in most cases is instinctively
obvious. This will trigger a denouement. There are 25 different
sketches: in this version called up purely at random.
